Asynchronous learning, or asyncronous distance learning, is one of two basic types of distance learning offered by online colleges and universities. The other basic type is synchronous learning, and there is a fundamental difference between these two types of courses.

Knowing the difference between asynchronous learning and synchronous learning is important, as the classes are taught in two different manners. For most attending distance learning colleges, asynchronous distance learning is the choice for them.

The basic difference between these two types of courses or learning styles is when you need to attend class. For most, the draw of attending college online is the fact that you can take your classes any time you choose. This is true for asynchronous learning, but not for synchronous classes.

Synchronous classes require you to attend class at regular times. You must log into your class at the same time as your instructor and the other students. It is more structured, and you have to be able to work with the schedule of your classes. You do not have the option to take your classes at various times throughout the quarter or semester. This may be a disadvantage for students choosing a distance learning program.

Asynchronous learning, however, does not require you to log in at specified times and take classes at the same time as your fellow students. Most communication during classes with universities offering asychronous distance learning occurs via email, discussion boards and forums. This is in contrast to “real time” communciation available with synchronous learning.

Synchronous learning may have some beneifits, as dealing with your instructor and other students in “real time” can be beneficial, but for most students enrolling in a distance learning course, asynchronous learning fits much better with their overall goals.

When choosing your distance learning university, be sure to know whether you are taking an asynchronous distance learning, or a synchronous course!

2. Take the class prospectus or curriculum to heart – With an online class, your curriculum is your guide as to when assignments are due, expectations of how they are graded and even the best contact methods for your professor. Keep this information handy at all times so you can always refer to it and refresh your memory.

You must master a variety of multimedia such as podcasts, web conferencing, message boards, instant messaging and online forums. If you can handle these things you will succeed as a virtual student.

4. Strike a balance – If you are juggling family and a job, earning a degree online through distance learning will require understanding and partnership with others in your life. Plan for unexpected problems such as a computer issues, internet breakdown or even outside problems. Devising solutions in advance, such as heading to the library when your computer or internet breaks down is important so you are not thrown for a loop.

5. Create a study place without distractions – If you plan to continue your studies online while at home, make sure your area is free of distractions and stocked with all the necessary supplies you need.

6. Make an effort to participate through all known forms of communication – If you participate in online discussion groups, forums and basically reach out to the professor and other students, your experience will be more fruitful and you will get more out of the class.

7. Stay motivated – It can be hard for distance learning students to maintain the momentum of that initial excitement of learning. Don’t slack off when you feel burned out. Instead, change the scenery. Go to the library and use their computers. Take a walk outside. Everyone has good and bad days, especially online. Do what you have to do to keep going. The end result – your degree – is well worth it.

8. Get the help you need – Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Open that class syllabus and find the contact information for other students and your professor. The best way to avoid interpreting your study information incorrectly is to get clarification as soon as you can.

Distance learning is the next trend in the area of higher education, but what is distance learning specifically? It goes by many other names that you may be more familiar with, such as online learning, online education, distance education, virtual college and e-learning. This trend allows students to pursue an educational degree program through an accredited university or college from the comfort of their home using a computer and internet connection.

While distance learning can also talk about various learning courses available via mail, the rising popularity of the internet has pretty much rendered that method of distance learning a thing of the past. With a computer, internet connection and self motivation, you can earn a distance learning education degree.

Advantages of College Distance Learning

The main advantage of distance learning is the flexibility you have, especially if you already have a job, children or other “grown up” responsibilities. You can study at midnight after the house has gone to bed, or squeeze in some course work during your lunch break at work. Being able to work at your own pace is a huge benefit of distance learning, and one of the main reasons to consider this kind of college education. Cheaper tuition for online courses also makes distance learning more affordable than traditional colleges or universites, adding another benefit to the working individual.

Drawbacks of an Online Education

Unless you are highly self motivated, online education can be tougher than you think. Some students currently taking online coursework complain that they miss the interaction of other students and the professor that can be found on a traditional university or college. Distance learning requires that you be disciplined in scheduling your study time, coursework and meeting deadlines. The reading and writing skills required because of the lack of teacher and student interaction can be difficult to overcome for some.

Types of Distance Learning

When talking about distance learning colleges, there are two basic types of courses offered. There are synchronous and asynchronous courses. Basically, the synchronous study programs require that you log into your online course work at the same time as your professor and other students in the “class.” Primary communication is in real time, through web cam and instant messaging. Asynchronous courses do not require simultaneous attendance with the professor and other classmates online. Most communication is through web chats, discussion boards and forums. In these asynchronous courses, you truly work

Making a Choice

There are many distance learning colleges and universities that offer many choices to help you obtain your degree online. After deciding on a particular field of study, you should choose an online school that best fits your learning style and has a good reputation in your chosen field. Also, be certain to choose an accredited online school so your degree is accepted by any future employers as well as other colleges and universities should you want to tansfer to another college.
